The IMAX film is about a fighter pilots experience of the advanced military aviation exercise based out at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. It was released in 2004 and for some reason I’ve never even heard of it until the other day. The short movie is packed with jaw dropping scenes in an F-15 cockpit roaring across the desert floor and through dreamy cloud formations with grace and extreme beauty. It makes you appreciate the pilots skill, courage and dedication to the art of flying and safety.
I wanted to make Behind The Yoke more of an authority site of aviation by adding some features to it that will enhance your experience! There are some great things in the works so stay tuned.

Aside from that, I haven’t done much flying lately. I am looking forward to help re-build an old Cessna 140 with my father-in-law once he gets his “working” hanger finished. I think he may win the prize of the newest Taj Mahanger in his neighborhood. It’s going to be super nice. I don’t think he’ll go so far as putting tile on the floor like his buddy across the runway. Wow.

Wired has video footage of the B2 crash in Guam that occurred in February of this year. Considering how much these baby’s cost lets just say I’m glad I wasn’t flying it. An article on the crash was published on Popular Mechanics earlier this month with some interesting comments. I was completely shocked to learn that the B2’s in Guam are stored outside occasionally? Uhhh…okay. A $1.5 billion aircraft left out in the humidity? Doesn’t make any sense to me.

On a less morbid note, The History Channel did a nice episode on the B2 bombers and you can watch that right here if you missed it (requires you to download Veoh Video). Highly recommended.

Heading to Oshkosh next week. Completely psyched. See ya there!

This morning I had the pleasure of taking the left seat with my father-in-law in his Twin Comanche. It wasn’t an official first lesson but it sure felt like one. The family is flying up to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh this summer and I needed to learn some basic flying skills to help out the pilot in command (PIC) for the trip.

The ground tasks for today were to work on braking, taxiing, and steering the aircraft around the taxiways and runways. Once we were in the air we worked on basic navigation and introductory pilot skills. Altitude and attitude control, turning and banking, trimming the aircraft. Visibility wasn’t very good from the haze so point of reference from the ground was difficult but everything worked out.

Tons of information to absorb and retain. Like drinking from a fire hose (a Tony expression). The experience was to say the least exhilarating. I love the intensity and how every dynamic involved with flying comes together and creates a sense of accomplishment. It’s like a well oiled clock in perfect sync. I very much look forward to the next flight. Hopefully my braking and steering will be little bit smoother during takeoff.
